We want to provide high quality running events that are affordable and family-friendly. We are a non-profit organization and our goal is to give back to the Pierce County running community through various means. For example, we hope to offer financial assistance to college-bound runners through the Washington State Cross Country Coaches Association's Scholarship program and all of the proceeds raised at the Four on the Fourth benefit local Cross Country and Track & Field programs.
In 1969, Carl Glatze founded the first running club in the Tacoma area and named it the Summit Running Club - after his mountain climbing club. In 1971, Keith Forman (former University of Oregon miler) was an instructor at Fort Steilacoom Community College (now Pierce College) and used the membership list of the Summit Running Club to establish the Fort Steilacoom Running Club. At this time, the club was directly associated with the college and received financial support from it. As the club membership grew, the club affiliation with the college ceased. Currently, all financial support is generated from the registration costs of races.
